National Insurance Calculator
Check employee National Insurance for any category letter — including under-21s, apprentices, veterans, deferment and employees over State Pension age.
National Insurance Calculator
Built using UK PAYE and HMRC payroll rules for the 2026/27 tax year. Estimate only — not an official payroll record.
Figures are estimates produced by our shared payroll engine using published UK PAYE, National Insurance and student loan rules. They are not official payroll records and must not be used as evidence of pay. HMRC RTI integration is in development and testing.
Running payroll for real employees?
Our employer payroll system stores your employees, calculates each payroll run and produces finalised payslips from the stored payroll record — never from a re-run of the calculator.
What is an NI category letter?
It tells payroll which National Insurance rates apply to an employee. Category A covers most employees; other letters cover under-21s, apprentices, veterans and deferment.
Is National Insurance cumulative like PAYE?
No. National Insurance is worked out on each earnings period on its own, using the thresholds for that period, which is how this calculator treats it.
Does it show employer NI?
Employer contributions are shown here too, and the Employer NI calculator focuses on the employer cost in more detail.
